When I tell people that I teach yoga, I inevitably hear, “I can’t do yoga. I am not flexible. I can barely touch my toes.” I assure you that yoga, especially Kundalini Yoga, is for everyone.
Kundalini Yoga is a 5000-year-old technology that had been kept secret until Yogi Bhajan, the master of Kundalini Yoga, came to the United States in 1969 and started to teach publicly. He felt that all people should have access to and have the ability to discover the profound benefits that result when practicing this type of yoga.
Much of what Yogi Bhajan has taught has been documented. Each Kundalini class combines breathwork (pranayama), postures (asana), sound current (mantra), and meditation to formulate a powerful set (kriya). Kundalini classes are like recipes. When you combine and perform specific poses and meditations in a specific sequence, for a specific amount of time, a specific benefit results.
Many yoga practices solely focus on the physical body, but Kundalini Yoga is much more than a great workout. Often called the Yoga of Awareness, through Kundalini Yoga one can awaken and raise his/her consciousness so that he/she can operate at his/her highest potential.
It is often said that yoga practice can change a person’s life. To an extent this is true, but the way I view it is that Kundalini Yoga, rather than changing me, has made me the person I have always wanted to be.
Personally speaking, Kundalini Yoga has quickly healed me from the physical and mental pain of a debilitating illness. For this alone, I am grateful to my teachers who helped me along the way and though I never had the opportunity to meet him before he left his body, I am especially thankful to Yogi Bhajan.
